According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, private employers in Arizona reported 69,500 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022. This means a total recordable cases (TRC) rate of 3.1 cases for every 100 full-time workers, which is higher than the national average of 2.7.
This means that several workplaces still face safety challenges. The numbers reveal that across industries, injuries and illnesses are more common in Arizona than other states. Work still needs to be done to reduce the rate, which includes worker training, equipment safety, and more effective processes.
Of the total cases, 40,300 required time away from work, restriction, or job transfer, known as DART cases. This leads to an incidence rate of 1.8 cases per 100 full-time workers.
The bad thing is that 60% of these cases led to at least one day away from work, which is slightly lower than the national average of 67%. That is a lot of people who need to take time off to recover from a workplace incident. Not to mention, 29.200 cases were recorded incidents. 1.3 cases per 100 workers were recordable, which is higher than the national rate of 10.
Most of the injuries were serious enough to disrupt a job’s workflow and someone’s life. Employers must pay close attention to the patterns of injuries and illnesses and provide solutions to reduce these incidents.
Some industries in Arizona struggle more than others with workplace injuries. Two sectors in particular – Education and Health Services and Trade, Transportation, and Utilities – accounted for 54% of all reported cases. What makes it more concerning is that these industries only represent about 40% of private-sector employment, which means the injury rates are disproportionately high.
As an example, Health Services and Education had a TRC rate of 4.3 cases per 100 workers, which was above the state average. These specific sectors usually involve close contact with other, fast-paced environments and physical labor.
Even industries with a lower overall injury rate, like Business and Professional Services, reported 2.1 cases per 100 workers. While this may seem better than other sectors, it is still important to remember that no industry is immune to workplace safety issues.
Statistics can provide a wake-up call for employers in Arizona. They can show where things may stand and where improvements may need to be made. Industries with higher injury rates, such as transportation and healthcare, can use the data to implement better safety measures and minimize risks.
